Nuclear fusion startup test fires plastic waste-powered rocket
A UK startup with ambitious hopes for sustainable space travel has successfully tested a rocket engine partially fuelled by plastic garbage.
Pulsar Fusion’s hybrid rocket engine is part of a larger mission that includes the development of nuclear fusion technology for high-speed propulsion, which might halve the time required to reach Mars.
Virgin Galactic experimented with the idea in 2014, using a rocket propelled by a thermoset plastics-based fuel, but the project was quickly abandoned following a failed test flight.
Skyrora, a Scottish startup, is also developing such a technology, having successfully tested its Ecosene fuel created from recycled plastic trash.
