Turning Plastic Waste into School Benches: Bengaluru Startup unWOOD’s Eco-Innovation
source- the better India
Every morning, thousands of schoolchildren across India sit on cold, hard floors—but one Bengaluru startup is changing that, one chip packet at a time! Meet unWOOD, a visionary company that has found a brilliant solution to two big problems: plastic waste and the lack of school furniture.
In just four months, unWOOD has recycled a staggering 10 tonnes of hard-to-recycle plastic waste—including 44,000 chip packets—into durable, wood-like outdoor furniture. These eco-friendly benches are now giving kids a comfortable place to sit, study, and learn.
But unWOOD’s impact goes beyond the classroom. The traditional furniture industry cuts down millions of trees every year, and with demand growing, more forests are at risk. By turning plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills into useful furniture, unWOOD is helping to save trees, reduce CO₂ emissions, and tackle plastic pollution.
Vishal Mehta, co-founder and mechanical engineer, explains: “We forget how many trees are cut to make a single chair or table. At a time when we’re talking about restoring biodiversity and tackling climate change, our mission is to create a positive impact—one bench at a time.”
unWOOD’s story is proof that innovative thinking can turn waste into something valuable, making the world cleaner and greener for future generations.
